trivia question Quick Question
Who did Pentangeli 'welch' out of a deal, that was supposedly made by Clemenza before he died?

52 Michael is less than pleased to learn that his sister plans to marry Merle Johnson. Complete his line to her: 'Connie...if you don't listen to me, and marry this man...you'll ________ ________.'
Answer: disappoint me

A classic moment where we know that Michael is furious, and yet his demeanor is ice cold. Ah, the days before 'acting' meant 'yelling' to Al Pacino.
53 What was the first and last name of the man who's face is the first you see on the screen when "Godfather I" opens up?
Answer: Amerigo Bonasera

Don Corleone's presence was imposing. These men stood before him and asked favors all the while realizing that if called upon, they would have to repay.
54 Don Vito Corleone returns to Sicily late in the film, and one of his goals is to exact revenge on Don Francesco Ciccio, the man responsible for the deaths of his father, mother, and brother. Who introduces the adult Vito to Don Ciccio?
Answer: Don Tommasino

Don Tommasino (Mario Cotone) -- whom observant viewers will recognize as the man who would one day act as 'sponsor' to Michael during his exile to Sicily in 'The Godfather' -- clearly has close ties to the Corleone family.

After Vito murders Don Ciccio, Tommasino is shot in the back during their escape, which is why he spends a good deal of 'The Godfather' in a wheelchair. Continuity -- ain't it fun?
55 Since the events of 'The Godfather' (1972), Fredo (John Cazale) has gotten married. What is his wife's name?
Answer: Deanna

Mariana Hill plays Deanna, a former Las Vegas showgirl who is apparently not with the program as far as Corleone family decorum is concerned.
56 What is the title of the song that Johnny Fontaine sang to Connie, the bride?
Answer: I Have But One Heart

Italian weddings are fun and this one looked glorious. A beautiful sunny day... lots of music... and a superstar in attendance.
57 When we first see Robert De Niro as Vito Corleone, what year is it?
Answer: 1917

Again, the ever-helpful title card tells us that it's 1917, in New York City. De Niro won his first Academy Award (as Best Supporting Actor) for his role as Vito, marking the first and only time (as of September 2005) that two actors have won Academy Awards for playing the same character: Marlon Brando had won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in 'The Godfather' two years earlier.
58 What was the name of Jack Woltz' horse?
Answer: Khartoum

I think "they" managed to convince Jack Woltz to give Johnny Fontaine the part in the war movie that he longed for.
59 Finish this quote from Michael, as he responds to Tom Hagen's accusation that he feels the need to 'wipe everyone out': 'I don't feel I have to wipe everyone out -- _______ _______ _______, that's all.'
Answer: just my enemies

The actual quote is 'just my enemies,' but I thought I'd be nice and allow for 'only my enemies,' as well. It's a fabulous line either way... and notice that Michael is eating an orange as he says it.
60 Peter Clemenza (Bruno Kirby) asks Vito Corleone to hide a package for him. What's in the package?
Answer: Guns

It is Vito's ability to keep quiet about the illegal contraband that leads Clemenza to invite him into his 'business.'
61 What was Tom Hagen carrying when he exited the department store, after Christmas shopping, when Virgil Solozzo intercepted and kidnapped him?
Answer: a sled

Solozzo knew Sonny was leaning toward the deal he dangled before the Don. Even though the Don refused, Solozzo imagined he had a solution and needed Tom Hagen to present it.
62 The actor who plays Genco -- the man who eventually brings Vito into the olive oil business -- also played a part in 1990's 'Goodfellas.' What part did he play in that Martin Scorsese film?
Answer: Frankie Carbone

Frank Sivero played both roles -- 26 years apart! An interesting tidbit I learned from Coppola's commentary on the DVD: he did not really want to direct 'The Godfather Part II,' and suggested to the studio that a young colleague of his take the reins instead. The studio executives absolutely refused Coppola's suggestion, since this 'Martin Scorsese' kid Coppola recommended was a nobody. Ha!
63 Outside the hospital, what was the cop's first name who was ordered by Captain McCluskey to take Michael Corleone in?
Answer: Phil

McCluskey hit Michael so fiercely that he broke his jaw. He was in a rage that protection was sent from the Mall for Don Corleone while he was in the hospital.
64 Who is the last family member Fredo Corleone speaks to before he is murdered?
Answer: his nephew, Anthony

Fredo and Anthony were all set to go fishing together, but Connie calls out to Anthony and states that Michael wants to take his son to Reno immediately. Fredo tells Anthony that they'll fish some other time...but he's wrong. Al Neri rows Fredo out to the middle of Lake Tahoe, and shoots him dead minutes later.
65 The day that he is forced out of his job (since Don Fanucci demands that his nephew be given the job instead), Vito brings home to his wife a piece of produce that she enjoys very much. What is it?
Answer: a pear

Oranges appear throughout the 'Godfather' movies, but in this case, Vito brought his wife Carmella a pear. 'Ah, what a lovely pear!' she says, upon seeing it.
66 What was Apollonia's family name?
Answer: Vitelli

This beautiful, innocent girl hit Michael with the "thunderbolt". He was in hiding in Sicily and therefore had to give up any plans he had had in the States with Kay. He did not know when, if ever, he could go back.
67 Frank Pentangeli commits suicide while in FBI protective custody. Who suggested that he take this course of action?
Answer: Tom Hagen

Tom and Frank have a long talk about the days of the Roman Empire, when a disgraced senator would take his own life in order to spare his family the echo of his discommodation. Apparently, Frank took Tom's words to heart.
68 After that explosion, when Apollonia was killed, when Michael woke up, what did he order Don Tomassino to do?
Answer: "Get me Fabrizio"

The explosion killed Apollonia. Seconds before, Michael saw Fabrizio heading toward the gate, he called out, Fabrizio turned but kept walking, in fact, sped up. Michael knew, right then...
69 How, exactly, does Frank Pentangeli kill himself?
Answer: He slits his wrists

The FBI agents wonder why Pentangeli is taking so long in the bathtub, break down the bathroom door, and discover him dead in the tub, his wrists slit.
70 When Fabrizio was finally found and killed in America, what kind of business was he in?
Answer: pizza

The Sicilian vendetta.
71 There's a rather fascinating 'flashback' scene at the very end of the movie that hearkens back to the days -- and cast -- of 'The Godfather.' Which character does NOT appear in this scene?
Answer: Vito Corleone

At the set-up for the birthday party for Vito Corleone, we see all of the brothers -- Sonny (James Caan), Fredo, Tom, and Michael -- Sonny's friend Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo), whom he introduces to Connie (Talia Shire) for the first time; and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda), who brings the cake. Despite Coppola's pleading, Marlon Brando simply refused to appear in 'The Godfather Part II,' even for just the one scene.
72 During the meeting of contributors and politicos in Cuba, a token of friendship made of solid gold is passed around the table. What is this unusual item?
Answer: a telephone

A solid gold telephone has been provided by 'UTT,' which is obviously meant to represent IT and T (predecessor to AT and T). It would seem that Coppola didn't want to implicate any actual American corporations in the activities of Cuba in late 1958.

And hey, wouldn't a solid gold telephone of that size be a LOT heavier than that prop? =)
73 Finish this quote from Hyman Roth to Michael Corleone, commenting on how successful mob activity has become in America: 'Michael...we're bigger than ____________.'
Answer: U.S. Steel

Unfortunately, Lee Strasberg is shirtless during this scene. [shudder]
74 One more for this first quiz; a second one is to follow. While in Cuba, Michael is among a large group of people celebrating Hyman Roth's birthday. How old is he?
Answer: 67

We can see Roth's age 'written' on his birthday cake.
